I closely followed the news about the incidents that ultimately led to the resignation of the Dutchman Ron Jans as the soccer coach of FC Cincinnati in America. Although, I refrain from judging this particular case, it reconfirms a very important message to any of you managers...

Two Days before Christmas I received a call from a son of an ex-colleague and pensionado. Sadly, his father died after a long sickbed, much too young. I was the manager of his father for an extensive period in his working life, but oddly, he also started out as being my first mentor in my working life.

First and foremost I would like to wish you and your close ones a very happy, successful and above all healthy 2020!

I regularly meet managers that explain to me they are totally occupied, no time to in their calendar, and have ample time to breath. Nothing wrong in working hard, but not breaking out of being controlled by your calendar is a ticket to a burn out!

One of the most essential attributes as a manager is empathic behaviour. However, this ability is frequently confused with being friendly and too kind to your employees or being "weak". A highly undesired assumption!

One of my first learnings the hard way, after becoming a manager, was the importance of numbers. Numbers, not feelings, do the talking!
